Since making their debut in 2020, Challenges have become a part of everyday life on NBA Top Shot. They’ve come a long way, and during the 2022-23 NBA season, Challenges will continue their evolution to make watching the NBA and collecting on Top Shot as exciting as ever.

Let’s dive into what you can expect from Challenges in Series 4, and if you're new to Top Shot, start your collection today to participate in upcoming Challenges.

Weekly Flash Challenges

Flash Challenges connect nightly NBA action and league-leading performances to Top Shot on a regular basis. It’s our game connected to the game.

Flash Challenges will be back in Series 4 and better than ever, headlined by new Fandom Sets of rewards and new ways to play that will be released throughout the season.

'The Challenge' is the 2022-23 NBA season Flash Challenge Reward Collection. Reward Moments will exist across three Fandom Sets — Pro, Icon and Champion — based on Challenge completion and mint count. Here’s how they break down:

  • 1-999 completions — The Challenge: Champion

  • 1,000-3,999 completions — The Challenge: Icon

  • 4,000+ completions — The Challenge: Pro

By dividing Rewards into three Fandom sets, collectors at all levels will have the opportunity to complete sets and never feel left out of the action.

The set each Moment falls into depends on the community completions of the Challenge. For example, if we release a Challenge and there are 2,500 completions, that Challenge Reward will be placed into The Challenge: Icon set.

We can’t wait to see everyone competing in Flash Challenges and have plenty of fun surprises in store before a new NBA champion is crowned.

The 2022-23 NBA Top Shot Challenge Schedule

The 2021-22 NBA season had an unpredictable Challenge schedule, which is one of the biggest areas of improvement we aimed to work on going into this season.

You can expect to have Flash Challenges available throughout the NBA regular season. Most Challenges will fall on Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday-Sunday, but throughout the season there will also be Flash Challenges on select Tuesdays and Thursdays based on scheduling.

Each of these Challenges will offer new Moments in the Flash Challenge sets.

We are also standardizing Flash Challenge announcements, when they will be live to complete and when they will end. We intend to announce all Flash Challenges at 1pm ET on the day of the challenge to give the community enough time to take a look at all the games and prepare for the night’s action.

Any Flash Challenge that is announced Monday-Thursday will be open to complete as soon as games end on that night. These Challenges will typically end the next day, but some will require longer timelines. Any Flash Challenge announced on Friday for our weekend Challenges will go live on Mondays at 1pm ET and will run for a minimum of 24 hours.

If we make any changes to this schedule, we will provide timely communications addressing it.

Burning and Hybrid Challenges

Burning Moments will be an integral part of Flash Challenges and Crafting Challenges during the 2022-23 NBA season.

All available tiers of Moments will be required for Crafting Challenges throughout the season. The Moments that are burned will be determined in a variety of different ways, like game-based action, thematic requirements or your own choice.

There may be alternate paths to completing Challenges without burning as the season progresses, which leads us to Hybrid Challenges.

Hybrid Challenges are a new innovation for Series 4 and will unlock new flexibility and variety, creating more ways for you to participate no matter how you choose to collect. These Challenges will feature functionality that allows us to assign different actions for different slots.

Challenge Reward Selection

Our all-star curation team will put together the best possible Moments for Flash Challenges. Some nights the reward will be announced when the Challenge is announced, and sometimes the reward will be directly tied to the action and selected in real-time. Collectors will know the player involved in the reward before a Challenge ends.

Set Challenges

For Run It Back 1986-87, we debuted a new format of Challenges in which collectors had to lock specific Moments in order to receive a reward.

This format will continue for Challenges to start the season, but each one may be built differently with different types of requirements (including Crafting).

If you want a complete set or an exclusive reward, you’ll have two options — lock/craft your Moments to earn it, or battle it out with other collectors to add it from the Marketplace.

Predictions

Series 4 will see the debut of Predictions. This will be a new way to prove your NBA knowledge and earn Moments. The best part? They’re completely free to enter.

Predictions will be announced at 1pm ET on days they are available and will lock at the start of the first game of the night. Winners will receive a pack with a single NBA Top Shot Moment.

These predictions may not be what you expect, but we can say with confidence that you will have fun following them.

The Road Ahead

We will never stop looking ahead and building the best possible Challenge experience on NBA Top Shot. New features will always be in development as we change the way you watch the NBA.

Thank you for your support and we look forward to another amazing season of NBA basketball.
