Updates on Moment Valuation

Your collection is your bid. Starting with the next trade-in auction, every Moment's bid value tracks what its edition actually sells for today.

On NBA Top Shot, you own the plays that define basketball, as officially licensed NBA Moments. Every Moment you collect is a piece of the game you get to keep.

Trade-in auctions are where that collection goes to work. Bid with Moments you already own for a shot at something bigger: a Case, a Box or a stack of Tip-Off Packs. The top bids win, and every Moment you commit carries a bid value, so the collectors who have built the most get the best shot.

That only works if bid value is fair, meaning a Moment counts for what collectors would really pay for it right now. How bid value is set has been under review, and starting with the next trade-in auction, the calculation is being updated.

🧮 How bid value works

A Moment's bid value is the median price of its edition's recent sales.

Recent sales. The edition's sales from the last 30 days are used (or its last 10 sales if that's more) and only sales from the past year count.

The median, not the average. The sales are lined up from lowest to highest, and the median is the sale with half the others above it and half below. With an even number of sales, the median is the average of the two center sales.

Each buyer counts once. IIf a collector buys several Moments from the same edition, only their most recent purchase is included, so no single buyer can set the value for everyone else. Moments sold back to Top Shot through buybacks are also excluded.

Every Moment in an edition has the same bid value, the same as today. That includes #1s, jersey-number serials and last serials.

🔍 Why it's changing

The old bid value was the average of an edition's last 10 sales, so one big sale could move the value of every Moment in the edition.

Say an edition's Moments trade between $22 and $30, and a collector buys the #1 serial for $750. That's a real sale, and a great pickup, but under the old calculation it pulled the average of the last 10 sales up to $98, so every Moment in the edition suddenly carried a $98 bid value. Under the median, the same sales give a bid value of $26, which is what the edition actually trades at. The #1 still sold for $750. It just doesn't set every Moment's price.

The same thing happened with quieter editions, where a single sale from years ago could keep setting the value long after. That isn't fair to the collectors bidding against it, and it isn't what trade-in auctions are for.

The new calculation was tested against real sales from 2026. Values landed much closer to what Moments actually sold for next, and they held steady instead of jumping with every unusual sale.

✅ What stays the same

  • Marketplace prices. The average sale price you see on the marketplace doesn't change. Bid value is currently only used inside trade-in auctions.
  • Leaderboards. Player and team leaderboards keep working exactly as they do today.

👀 Where you'll see it

Inside every trade-in auction, each Moment now shows its bid value, and you can filter and sort by it. You'll see the bid value of every Moment before you commit anything.

🧪 This is a trial

Before the main Rookie Debut auctions resume, a smaller stress test auction will run first to make sure everything works as it should on the new bid value. Details are coming soon, so stay tuned.

The new bid value is running as a trial in trade-in auctions while it's monitored. Share what you think in Discord or on X. Any adjustment will be announced before it takes effect, and will only apply to auctions that open afterward.

Collect what you love, and bid with what you've built.

FAQ

Where can I see my Moment's bid value?

Inside a trade-in auction. Open any live trade-in auction and start choosing Moments to commit, and you'll see the bid value of each Moment you own, with the option to sort and filter by it. Bid value isn't shown on Moment pages or in your collection, because it's set for each auction and only counts inside that auction.

Can I filter the marketplace by bid value?

No. Bid value only exists inside trade-in auctions. To sort or filter your Moments by bid value, open a trade-in auction.

Why doesn't my Moment's bid value match its average sale price?

They measure different things. The marketplace average sale price is the average of the edition's last 10 sales. Bid value is the median of its recent sales, and it's only used in trade-in auctions.

Why did my Moment's bid value change?

Bid value now follows what most of an edition's recent sales look like, so one big sale or a sale from years ago no longer sets it. For editions that trade often, it lands close to where it was. For others, it can move up or down to match what the edition sells for today.

Do #1s, jersey numbers and last serials get a higher bid value?

No. Every Moment in an edition has the same bid value, just like before.

What if my edition hasn't sold in the past year?

It won't have a bid value in that auction, so it can't be committed. Once the edition sells again, it'll have a bid value in the next trade-in auction.

Does this change player or team leaderboards?

No. Leaderboards work exactly as they do today.

Can a bid value change during an auction?

No. Bid values are locked when the auction opens.

Is this permanent?

It's a trial. The auctions and your feedback are being watched closely, and any change will be announced before it happens.
